Characteristics of Acmella Oleracea

"The main active metabolite of Acmella oleracea, spilanthol, promotes the relaxation of the facial mimic muscles and helps to reduce expression lines."

The flowering aerial parts of Acmella oleracea contain numerous secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids, polysaccharides, terpenoids, coumarins and N-alkylamides. Spilanthol belongs to the latter group, an alkaloid responsible for the pungent taste of the plant and its main biological activities.

In particular, spilanthol promotes:

- an anti-inflammatory action as it acts as an agonist of the cannabinoid receptor CB2-R, thus inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators;
- an anesthetic action thanks to the inhibition of the vanilloid receptor TRPV1 involved in pain signaling;
- a muscle relaxant action, that is, it helps reduce repetitive contractions of the subcutaneous muscles, especially the facial muscles, which are the cause of expression wrinkles.

Advice for an effective home treatment

Before applying the mask, it is always advisable to scrub the skin of the face to allow the removal of dead skin and impurities, thus having an effective and rapid penetration of the active ingredients. A very effective product in this case is the exfoliating cream with salicylic acid that acts both mechanically and chemically for an effective peeling.
